A good analogy is the labeling of cigarettes. Labeling gasoline that it contains ethanol is like labeling cigarettes that they contain paper – ethanol is the only part of gasoline that would not hurt you.

Tivo: Are We Not Zen?

The Motley Fool Stock Advisor newsletter recommendation is still in a good place. It's the only brand that matters in this space. It has amassed 4.4 million subscribers, is prying its way into more retail channels like RadioShack(NYSE:RSH), and also apparently has a defensible patent, given its legal victory over EchoStar(NASDAQ:DISH). TiVo also factors to be an ironic force in television advertising, a point hammered home in last night's report with ad revenues doubling.

Yes, TiVo's report isn't perfection. At this price, it doesn't have to be. All TiVo can do at this point is feed hope for the future, and right now that particular cupboard is loaded with dining possibilities.

Longtime Fool contributor Rick Munarriz does have a TiVo but he does not own shares in the company.

Editorials from Wisconsin newspapers

If an adult today throws his arms out to his sides, points his thumbs up and growls, "Heeeeeyyyyyyy," a kid would look at him as if he's from bizarro world, not channeling the Fonz.

By the same token, a kid of today who was transported back to the days when her parents were glued to "Happy Days" would be greeted by blank stares if she talked of "dissing" her friends.

Truth is, human beings are pretty weird. We can get a glimpse of how weird every year by reading the Beloit College Mindset List - this year's version of which was released last month.

The Mindset List initially was, as the college's Web site says, "a witty way of saying 'watch your references' (that) has turned into a globally reported and utilized guide to the intelligent but unprepared adolescent consciousness."

That's ivory-tower talk that means the list defines how different the class of 2010, entering college this year, is from previous generations and the adults that raised them.
