E85 Ethanol Prices
How much of the nation's corn crop is used for ethanol production? In 2004, 1.26 billion bushels of corn went to ethanol production – about 12% of the nation's total crop. That figure rose to 14% for the '05 corn crop – about 1.6 billion bushels of an 11.1 billion bushel crop. As the nation's ethanol production climbs, some bushels from the export category will likely shift over into ethanol production.

9th District: Heated Gas/Energy Debate
The political season usually heats up after Labor Day, but candidates in Indiana's 9th District race are getting an early start with a debate in Bloomington. The big issues: gas prices and an energy plan. Congressional Candidate Baron Hill (D): "We need a new energy policy in this country. One that weans us from our dependency on foreign oil. Too long have we been dependent on foreign oil, that needs to stop." Representative Mike Sodrel (R): "Now he talks about ethanol. He voted against it when he was in. When I took office in February 2005, there was not one E85 ethanol pump in Indiana. We've already exceeded our 2006 goal of 40." Libertarian candidate Eric Schansberg: "I'm the only fiscal conservative in this race. The incumbent has been mostly a rubber stamp for President Bush and the Congress, spending money like drunken sailors and using credit cards to pay for it." In the 8th District race, candidates Republican John Hostettler and Democrat Brad Ellsworth, still haven't agreed on a debate schedule.
Converting To Ethanol
Gas prices are below $2.50 for the first time in months. While it may have you more willing to drive more, one of KELOLAND's biggest flex-fuel vehicle supporters worries it will also make people less willing to make the switch to E-85. One Mt. Vernon man who installs e85 conversion kits is now fighting for government certification, to get more people using ethanol. "This car we could do in about 15 minutes." After a little more than 15 minutes under the hood of his '97 Dodge Caravan, Brian Dodd is driving on e85 fuel. In his shop near Mt. Vernon, Dodd installs kits that convert nearly any regular vehicle with a fuel injector into a flex-fuel vehicle. It's an attractive idea for anyone who wants to pay the lowest price at the pumps, which is usually the 85% ethanol blend.
Big plans for Saab BioPower in Australia
Saab BioPower, the best selling environmentally friendly vehicle in Sweden, is on its way to Australia to promote the benefits of ethanol, a renewable alternative fuel. Running on E85, 85 per cent ethanol 15 per cent petrol, Saab BioPower 9-5 was launched in Sweden at the end of last year. In less than a year it has become the top selling environmentally friendly car in that market and driven record 9-5 sales. BioPower has also been launched in the UK and other markets across Europe. Saab Australia will be running a demonstration fleet of BioPower 9-5 vehicles in Australia to help media, industry and government understand the benefits of ethanol and to stimulate serious debate about alternative fuels in Australia. Director Saab Australia and New Zealand, Parveen Batish, says with a focus on fuel prices and the need for renewable energy, the time is right to start planning a BioPower roll-out in this market.
