E85 Ethanol Powered Student Project Chevy Cobalt SS Will Attempt ...

GM Performance Division returned to the Bonneville Salt Flats this week, intent on making up for lost time and focused on becoming the first team to set a record using E85 ethanol.

After only two days of speed trials last August, a violent storm swept through northern Utah , leaving standing water on the immense natural speedway and causing officials to cancel the final four days of the event. Until that point, GM Performance Division had set just one record in the G/BGL class (G Class/Blown Gas Lakester) with its Ecotec Lakester, which makes 2006 a redemption year of sorts for the team.

A Chevrolet Cobalt SS race car engineered in part by three female students, which will attempt to set records using both E85 ethanol and gasoline in the G/FCC (G Class/Unblown Fuel Competition Coupe) and G/GCC (G Class/Unblown Gas Competition Coupe) classes, respectively.

Survey: Many hybrid shoppers have 'unrealistic expectations'

More than half of consumers who plan to buy a new car in the next two years will consider a hybrid, researcher J.D. Power and Associates said Thursday.

But those buyers will enter the market with ``unrealistic expectations'' about the fuel economy provided by those gas-electric models.

Power surveyed 4,000 people in July who said they intend to buy a new vehicle in the next two years. More than half (57 percent) said they would consider buying a hybrid, 49 percent said they'd consider a vehicle that burns an E85 ethanol blend and 12 percent said they'd consider a diesel car or truck.

In fact, just 23 percent said that they'd only consider a gasoline vehicle.

Consumers said they would expect to pay $5,250 more for a hybrid than a similar gasoline-only model.

Is ethanol the answer?

August 31, 2006 - It's called E85 ethanol -- and it's touted by American automakers and the Bush administration as a homegrown, green alternative to gasoline. It's actually 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent regular gasoline. Consumer Reports just tested one of the vehicles that can run on E85.
