Ethanol
What is cellulosic ethanol? Cellulosic biomass, dubbed the most abundant material on earth, holds tremendous promise as a feedstock for ethanol production due to its widespread availability and potential for high fuel yields. Examples of sources for cellulosic ethanol include corn stover (the stalks and husks left over after harvest), wheat and barley straw, sugarcane or rice bagasse, sawdust, paper pulp, small diameter trees, and dedicated energy crops such as switchgrass and other fast-growing grasses.

President Obasanjo Says Ethanol Will Be Compulsory for Nigerian ...
President Olusegun Obasanjo has said the Administration would make the use of ethanol in fuel compulsory, like the cassava flour in wheat for bread. The President was speaking to Mr. Roberto Gianneti da Fonseca, Director of the Sao Paulo Federation of Industries, at State House, Abuja on September 7. .
Beattie promises cheaper fuel with ethanol plan
Petrol produced in Queensland will have to contain 5 or 10 per cent ethanol under a scheme unveiled today by Premier Peter Beattie. The Opposition says the Government has failed in previous opportunities to support an ethanol mandate, but Mr Beattie says there are constitutional problems with mandating the sale of ethanol-blended fuel. So he has come up with another idea - forcing oil companies to include it at the production stage in Queensland. He says that way non-ethanol petrol produced elsewhere could still be sold. "We believe that legally we're on good grounds, we believe that because the price of oil is as high as it is petrol and oil companies are not really in a great position to argue with us publicly," he said. Earlier Mr Beattie was ambushed by Nationals MP Rob Messenger as he arrived in Bundaberg for a day of campaigning on water and health.
Shell and Caltex 'ignoring ethanol fuel'
Shell and Caltex, which dominate petrol sales in Australia, are ignoring the push towards ethanol-blended fuels, the Service Station Association (SSA) says. SSA boss Ron Bowden said despite Shell and Caltex supplying more than 65 per cent of the industry, it was independent service stations that were heading ethanol promotion. "It's the independent sector that has led the way with it and always has and is still doing it," Mr Bowden told ABC Radio. Deputy Prime Minister Mark Vaile told a food industry dinner on Monday night that supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths, and their fuel partners Shell and Caltex, need to promote more ethanol-blended fuel at their 1,000 outlets around Australia. Only one of their outlets, a Woolworths petrol station in Cairns, currently sells the 10 per cent ethanol blend (E10), which retails at about four cents less than unleaded petrol.
A look at ethanol as an alternative fuel
Every mile driven in traditionally fueled vehicles brings the world closer to the day fossil fuels dry up. The U.S. government has approved some mandates to lessen the reliance on gasoline and diesel. Environmentalists are pushing for alternatives to power U.S. cars and trucks, such as ethanol-based fuel or biodiesel. What is ethanol fuel? Ethanol is a high-octane fuel basically grain alcohol produced from crops such as corn. The American Coalition for Ethanol advocates its production as a method of reducing Americas dependence upon foreign energy sources. E85 is a motor fuel that blends 85 percent ethanol with 15 percent gasoline and can be used in flex-fuel vehicles. It is sold in 37 states at 600 gas stations, Car and Driver magazine reported in July.
