Homemade Ethanol
How is cellulosic ethanol made? As with producing ethanol from grain, processing cellulosic sources extracts the fermentable sugars from the feedstock for distillation into alcohol. Unlike in grain, the sugars in cellulose are locked in complex carbohydrates called polysaccharides, or long chains of simple sugars. Separating these complex structures into fermentable sugars is essential to the efficient and economical production of cellulosic ethanol.

Beattie promises cheaper fuel with ethanol plan
Petrol produced in Queensland will have to contain 5 or 10 per cent ethanol under a scheme unveiled today by Premier Peter Beattie. The Opposition says the Government has failed in previous opportunities to support an ethanol mandate, but Mr Beattie says there are constitutional problems with mandating the sale of ethanol-blended fuel. So he has come up with another idea - forcing oil companies to include it at the production stage in Queensland. He says that way non-ethanol petrol produced elsewhere could still be sold. "We believe that legally we're on good grounds, we believe that because the price of oil is as high as it is petrol and oil companies are not really in a great position to argue with us publicly," he said. Earlier Mr Beattie was ambushed by Nationals MP Rob Messenger as he arrived in Bundaberg for a day of campaigning on water and health.
